Yobe To Train 257 Science, Mathematics Teachers by Ngozi Onyekwelu
The Yobe State Government has approved the release of over N31 million for the training of 257 teachers in the Sciences and Mathematics at the National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Abuja. The training and retraining of the teachers is to produce more qualified science and maths teachers which has been identified by Yobe State Economic And Social Summit Group (YESSG) as the main antidote to the state’s development and delivery of education services in the state. Already a total of 100 teachers have completed their retraining in mathematics at the NMC .
Approving the release of the training funds at a recent council meeting in Damaturu, the state capital,Governor Mamman Ali said, “In acoordance with the priority accorded to the education sector and to produce well trained and experienced teachers in the sciences and mathematics, 257 primary and secondary school teachers have been selected to undergo intensive training at the mathematics training centre.”
He also added that the state’s education sector required urgent attention because only 20 secondary school students last year qualified for university and polytechnic entries, while more than 85 percent of the teachers in primary and secondary schools are either non professional teachers or not qualified at all to teach in the 282 and 1,011 secondary and primary schools.
This, he said, informed his administration’s decision to accord education topmost prority by allocating to the sector over 26 per cent of this year’s appropriation bill.
