The Principal of LSS, Mrs. Garcia speaks on ills of Boarding House

We don’t encourage boarding because we feel that the primary educators of children are the parents. God has given them the gift to be the caretakers of these children. Therefore education is offered by the parents. It’s just that the school has the technical know-how and the structure, so parents send them to school. In America, a large percentage of children are home-schooled. We do not want parents to delegate the responsibility of raising their children. The education that parents give is irreplaceable. I think the boarding system is popular in Nigeria because of the British influence. Therefore, they tend to follow that model. In my country you are only sent to boarding school if you are a troublemaker (laughs). The distance between most homes and their school of choice is also a problem in Nigeria. The solution to this would be to have very good school in all the key areas of a town, you know, have a school in Lekki Phase One, another in Victoria Island, another in Ajah, another in Ikeja and so on such that parents do not have to travel far everyday to transport children to school and back. A lot of people send their children to boarding school so that they become independent but this can actually be taught at home. If your home is disciplined then there is time for everything. There is time for breakfast, time for studying, time for lunch, time for dinner. There should be rules so that your children know what is expected of them. Not in a military way but there should be rules.
