The Nigerian Labour Congress on the Teachers’ Strike

The Nigerian Labour Congress has blamed state governments for the Federal Government’s reluctance in issuing the circular on the Teachers Salary Scale (TSS).

The Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the NLC, Mr Unyime Usoro while commenting on his union’s readiness to commence negotiations on the circular with Akwa Ibom Government, said “We are enthusiastic to see the circular out so that we would negotiate with the state government for our workers.” But most state governments are responsible for the inability of the government to act decisively on the matter. It would be recalled that Minister of Education, Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu had said that the Federal Government cannot issue the circular on TSS because many State Governments would not be able to implement the salary structure. Unity schools in Akwa Ibom were yet to close and discontinue with the promotion examinations unlike their counterparts in public schools, investigations have revealed.

Could this be a case of dichotomy between federal teachers and those employed by the states?
