Venezuela to adopt Nigerian schools
The adopt-a-school programme initiated by the Ministry of Education appears to be receiving overwhelming support of not only the corporate world but also international agencies. Among the latest agencies to identify with the initiative is the government of Venezuela, which has promised to adopt two primary schools in Nigeria.
The country’s ambassador, Boris Henriquez stated this when he visited the Minister of State for Education, Adewunmi Abitoye in Abuja recently.
Henriquez said embassy has seen one primary school in Kubwa in the Federal Capital territory and requested the ministry to select the second primary.
“If the government approves the request, these two schools will be renovated and supplied with educational materials by the Venezuelan government,” the ambassador said.
The ambassador disclosed that Venezuelan government is also exploring the possibility of having Spanish Language taught in some Nigerian universities, especially the University of Abuja.
Responding, Abitoye commended the Venezuelan government for identifying with ongoing reform of Nigeria’s education system and called on other countries to emulate the gesture.
Abitoye said the teaching of Spanish in Nigerian universities is a welcome development given that the language is widely spoken and would further cement the relationship between the countries.
He noted that Nigeria and Venezuela have a lot to learn from each other and pledged the support of the ministry to the plan.
