Government to Enact Law on Female Education by Oge Okanu

The Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, disclosed in Minna yesterday at an interactive session with Chairpersons and Councilors of the 25 local government areas and 274 wards in the state that a legislation that would prevent parents from withdrawing their female children from school is under-way.

Aliyu explained that when the law is enacted, it would become an offence for any parent or guardian to withdraw their female children from school for the purpose of early marriage or any other reason.

He stated that the measure had become necessary to ensure the success of the free education for the girl-child being implemented by the state government.

The Governor also disclosed that secondary schools in the state would now fully implement the Family Life Education curriculum to cater for sexuality education and family matters, especially its significance for the prevention of undesirable consequences.

Aliyu admonished parents to always teach their female children sexuality education, especially when the children begin to mature, to check teenage pregnancies.

He disclosed that the state government is to apply for a new strategy in the administration of educational institutions as a way of re-orienting pupils and students in line with the norms, aspirations and socio-cultural dictates of our communities.

According to him, the new method of school administration shall be driven by community-based school management committees, which would complement the activities of Parents Teachers Associations.
