FG maintains stand on teachers’ demand by Frank Oke
The Federal Government has said that it could not implement the Teachers’
Salary Scale (TSS), in spite of the intervention of the National Assembly.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) had on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike to press for the implementation of the TSS.
The situation had prompted the House of Representatives to pass a resolution on Wednesday, calling for the immediate implementation of the salary.
“We appreciate the intervention of the National Assembly and other stakeholders on the issue.
“But we cannot meet the demand for immediate implementation of the
TSS,'’ a top official of the Federal Ministry of Education who preferred anonymity, said, adding that the House resolution was not binding on government.
“The resolution is a good attempt to address the issue but it is not enforceable,'’ he stated.
He maintained that the government could not dialogue with the NUT while the strike was going on.
“The first step is for the union to call off the strike before we can open negotiations with them,'’ he said.
