Dearth of Quality Public School Teachers, a National Problem
Professor Olawoye Adegboye, a lecturer at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology while speaking at the third graduation ceremony of Oyeleke Memorial College, Offa, decried the decline in the quality of teachers in most of Nigeria’s public schools. The trend he said, if not addressed, will cramp the growth of education in the country. He attributed the problem in part the hapharzard distribution pattern of teachers. For example, statistics show that in December 2005, Asa Local Government Area required 662 teachers and had 1,064 on ground; while in Baruten Local government Area, they required 1,147 while they had only 878 teachers on ground.
