More than 300 civil servants in Bauchi State have volunteered to teach in primary and secondary schools to make up for the dearth of teachers in the state.
Governor Isa Yuguda, who disclosed this in Bauchi while declaring open a two-day meeting of officials of the Nigeria National Volunteer Service (NNVS), said the workers had already registered with NNVS, and that the measure was part of the efforts to raise the standard of education in the state.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Aminu Hamayo, said the government had worked out modalities to encourage participation in the scheme.
He said the government had also concluded arrangements to establish NNVS desk offices in all the 20 local government areas of the state and lamented the poor response of indigenes of the state to the call for assistance in developing the state.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of NNVS, Ambassador Joe Keshi, said that about 10 million Nigerians, mostly professionals, whose services are needed at home, reside overseas.
